10 Things You Learn While Half-Marathon Training
Posted on 18th October 2023 at 09:00
Training for the Coventry Half Marathon has been quite the journey for us. It’s been a roller coaster ride of successes, setbacks, and everything in between. As we reflect on our training experience, we realise that the lessons we’ve learned go far beyond the realms of running.
Here are 10 invaluable takeaways that have not only shaped our approach to the half marathon but also our perspective on life itself!
1. The power of a training buddy
Having a training buddy isn’t just about having someone to run with. It’s about motivation, moral support, nagging (in the best way possible), and jelly baby distribution! In life, having a support system is just as crucial, as surrounding yourself with positive influences can make a significant difference.
2. Setting goals and focusing on the present
Setting end goals is important, but the key is to focus on the mile you’re in. Small successes add up. Life is a series of moments; appreciating and working through each one brings you closer to your goals.
3. Don’t dwell on failures
In our training journey, we encountered missed runs and injury niggles. Instead of dwelling on these setbacks, we learned to accept them, adapt, and persevere. Life, too, throws curveballs, so it’s essential to acknowledge failures, learn from them, and keep moving forward.
4. Take time to focus and clear your head
Running in the early morning provided us with a peaceful, empowering space for reflection. In life, make sure that you take time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy time for yourself. It’s in these moments of solitude that we find clarity and strength.
5. Set your own pace
Just as in running, life has its natural rhythm, so embrace it. If you go too fast, you’ll burn out but go too slow and it can feel unproductive. So, trust your instincts; they often lead you to your happy place.
6. Stop overthinking
We tend to overanalyse every detail, from our diet to our performance. While reflection is essential, trusting your instincts and not overthinking every decision can save you from lots of unnecessary stress.
7. Get prepared
Preparation is key. Stretching, warming up, and taking care of your body can prevent many setbacks. In life, being prepared, whether it’s for a presentation or a personal challenge, lays the foundation for success.
8. Simplicity is key
In a world inundated with products promising miracles, simplicity is often overlooked. The most crucial piece of equipment is you. So, take care of yourself with nutrition, hydration, good trainers, listening to your body and yes, sports massage to help keep you in tip top shape.
9. Balancing work and life
Finding balance is challenging, it’s safe to say that we all wish for more hours in a day! While a time machine might be a fantasy, learning to balance work, life, and personal goals is an ongoing journey. Be patient and work on prioritising and allocating your time wisely.
10. Celebrate your achievements – even the little ones!
We’re looking forward to finishing the marathon, not necessarily with a personal best, but with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Life, too, is a series of finish lines, so celebrate your achievements, big or small!
