You’ve had your massage. You’ve floated off the table, your shoulders have dropped several inches and your body has finally stopped yelling at you. Wonderful.
But we often forget that what you do next matters just as much as the massage itself. Aftercare is where all that good work settles in, sticks around and continues to support your body long after you’ve left the treatment room. So if you’re wondering what comes next, here’s how to give your body the best possible chance to soak up every last benefit.
Start with the basics: hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Your therapist has spent the last hour easing tension, improving circulation and helping your body shift into a calmer state. Water helps your system move things along, regulate and recover.
Sip steadily, don’t chug. Your body will thank you with fewer headaches, less sluggishness and a smoother ‘post-massage glow.’
Take your time coming back to earth
Feeling a bit floaty, dreamy or light-headed? Totally normal.
Your nervous system has downshifted into ‘rest-mode,’ so give it a moment before you bounce up and stride out the door. Sit up slowly, take a few breaths, stretch gently and allow your brain to catch up with your body. Landing the plane gentle rather than crashing back down to earth.
If you’ve been given exercises…please actually do them
We know, we know, homework isn’t glamorous. But those 2-3 simple movements your therapist gives you? They’re gold.
They’re designed to:
Support what was released during the session
Keep old patterns from creeping back in
Help your muscles stay mobile and pain free for longer
It’s the ‘extend the benefits’ button. Two minutes a day can really make a difference.
Avoid stress (or at least delay it a little)
Your body has just been lovingly coaxed into relaxation. The last thing it needs is for you to bold into a meeting, sprint through a food shop or dive into an intense workout.
If you can, give yourself a buffer.
Go home.
Have a cuppa.
Read something soft.
Put on music that slows your shoulders down.
Even 30 minutes of calm helps your muscles absorb the work instead of snapping back into tension.
Let recovery do its thing
Massage isn’t just what happens on the table, it’s everything that unfolds afterwards. When you rest, hydrate and avoid rushing around, you allow:
Your muscles to stay looser for longer
Your nervous system to stay regulated
Inflammation to settle
And the therapeutic effects to properly sink in
And if you’re having regular massage as part of recovery or maintenance? Consistent aftercare makes each session more effective.
Choose your timing wisely
If you squeeze in a massage in between meetings or right before a stressful event, you cut the benefits short before they’ve even had a chance.
Instead, aim for pockets in your week where you can properly unwind afterwards. It doesn’t need to be hours, just enough time to let your body soak up the good stuff. Give yourself – and your body – permission to continue the work long after your therapist has finished.
Final thoughts
Massage is more than an hour of hands-on treatment – it’s a whole-body experience that carries on well beyond the session. Supporting yourself with hydration, simple exercises, low-stress time and gentle recovery helps you truly get the most out of it.
So next time you leave the treatment room feeling lighter and looser…keep the momentum going. A little aftercare goes a long way.
Whenever you feel ready for your next session, our friendly Fire & Earth team is here to help your body stay happy, mobile and well looked after.
